ADMINISTRATIVE GUIDELINE TITLE: Admissions, Progression, and Graduation Criteria for the Medical Assistant Program

DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBLE: Academic Affairs

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

This guideline outlines the admissions, progression, and graduation criteria for the Medical Assistant Program.

II. USERS GOVERNED

This guidelines applies to credit, degree-seeking students.

III. ADMISSION

Students must meet all of the following criteria to be accepted into the Medical Assistant Program:

  1. High school diploma or equivalency.
  2. Students must complete one of the following standardized tests in Math and Reading and attain the minimum scores listed in the grid below:
    ACT® SAT® Next-Gen Accuplacer® ALEKS®
     Reading: 19
    Math: 19
    Reading/ Writing: 330
    Math: 510
    Reading: ≥ 248 Math: ≥ 14
  3. Standardized placement scores must be completed within 24 months at the time of review for acceptance.
  4. Completion of the required meeting with the Student Advocate.

IV. ENROLLMENT

Students must meet all the following criteria before enrolling in the first class of the Medical Assistant Program:

  1. Accepted students are required to attend the mandatory Medical Assistant Orientation to confirm enrollment.
  2. Complete and obtain clearance of a criminal, dependent adult and child abuse background.
  3. Complete and obtain clearance of a physical evaluation.
  4. Documentation of required immunizations for Healthcare Personnel.
  5. Complete and sign a Confidentiality Agreement.
  6. Students must have earned a grade of C (2.0) or above in all Medical Assistant program coursework. “All coursework” includes all Arts and Science courses required in the Medical Assistant Program.
  7. Satisfy “Iowa Core Performance Standards” / “Essential Functions” guidelines.

V. PROGRESSION

  1. Students must meet designated course prerequisites to enroll in Spring Semester courses (refer to College catalog for course descriptions.)
  2. Students must successfully complete all Medical Assistant Program course work with a grade of “C” (2.0) or above by the end of their final spring semester to be eligible to enroll in MAP-615 Clinical Externship and MAP-602 Clinical Experience Seminar.
  3. Student must complete all coursework required in the Medical Assistant Program with a grade of “C” or above.
  4. Students who have not completed all preparatory coursework with a grade of “C” (2.0) or above may repeat these courses during their spring semester if the course is available and scheduling allows.

VI. GRADUATION

  1. Students may participate in spring Commencement if there is evidence of satisfactory progression as determined by the program coordinator and Registrar that diploma requirements will be met following the summer term externship.
  2. Student’s must earn a grade of “C” (2.0) or above in all required courses in the Medical Assistant Program to be eligible for graduation.
